Preparation of Mouth for Dentures

A denture is an appliance that is inserted in the mouth, replaces natural teeth and provides support for the cheeks and lips.

Most dentures are made of acrylic and can be fabricated two different ways.

A conventional denture is made after all teeth have been extracted and the tissues (gums) have healed.
An immediate denture is fabricated and inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted and the tissues are allowed to heal under the denture.
An upper denture has acrylic; usually flesh colored that covers the palate (roof of the mouth).
A lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to leave room for the tongue.

Soft Tissue Abnormality

Often there are tissue or bone abnormalities which require revision prior to placing a denture.

Denture well supported with attached gingival tissue and bone.

Excessive Tissue Growth

Excessive soft tissue may inhibit the fit of the denture and may require surgical revision. Removal of the tissue will provide better support for the prosthesis.

Denture moves back and forth on mobile tissue.

After Surgery

With the Tuberosity removal the Denture is much more stable.

Bony Abnormality

Bony protuberances call Tori and Exostosis can inhibit the fit of a Denture and have to be removed.
